Database Move

Hi
I am doing a test database migration for SQL Reporting Services (leaving
the front end as it is). I have successfully moved the database using
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842425 as ref guide. I have also moved
the databases that the reports uses to collect data from. I have updated
the data source icon for the reports to point to new database location.
When i want to view the reports i now get the following error:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL
Server connection
Have i missed a step to get this working (there is no mention on KB842425
about security settings)?
Your help will be appreciated.

Database mirroring

I have a database that I want to split up so that I separate the
transactional side from the reporting side. It seems that database mirroring
(or something similiar) is what I should do.
So I'll a have Transaction database that mirrors with a Reporting database.
They both have the same data but all the inserts, update etc happen on the
Transaction database and all the reporting happen on the Reporting database.
And now my question...
The Transaction database only needs the last ws data to do its job. The
Reporting database needs all the data for reporting (about 3 years of data).
It seems a waste that we keep 3 years of data in the Transaction database.
Even though all changes in the Transaction database should be reflected in
the Reporting database, I was wondering if I flagged a row as Do_Not_Mirror
and then deleted that row, it would NOT replicate that delete in the
reporting database. That way the Transaction database would be small and
efficient, and the Reporting database would have all the data needed for
reports. I don't know if such a thing exists.
Is this a good idea ? Or am I wasting my time trying to reduce the size of
the Transaction database ? I'm hoping there's a standard way of doind this.
Or that someone has done something similiar.
Any advice would be welcome
CraigThe purpose of database mirroring is to increase the availability of the
server - i.e. the database mirror is used when the principal server is dow
for some reason.
While mirroring is engaged the mirror cannot be accessed.
What you're describing is replication - look at the options in Books Online.
ML
http://milambda.blogspot.com/|||The "database mirroring" feature in SQL Server 2005 will not be good for thi
s. However, consider
using transactional replication. You could for instance have triggers on the
subscription database
which reads this "do not mirror" flag and doesn't do the delete for these ca
ses. Perhaps even
instead of triggers would be the best choice here. I'd first verify whether
you really need to
delete old data, first...

Database Mirror or Log Shipping?

We are going to setup a new secondary server for reporting purpose. A group
of users will use the secondary database for data modeling, analysis, etc.
We have already setup two log shipping secondary servers for the primary,
one is over WAN. The logs are backup and restore on every 15 minutes. For
the past several years, log shipping has been working fine.
I would like to hear some opinion about database mirror, especially from
those who are using database mirror now. Is there any complication after
use database mirror?
Thanks!
Lijun
You cannot use a DB that is the target of log shipping. However, you can
create a DB snapshot on a DB mirror and report off of that.

I seem to remember something like this, but I think it was more an issue
with log shipping. For example, logshipping to another server -- and putting
a snapshot on the destination -- causes problems with log shipping restores
being able to be applied. probably not an issue with mirroring but i
couldn't remember.
If you would ever failover to the reporting server if the live OLTP went
down, remember that if it is a corruption -- the mirrored box might become
corrupted as well -- but with a log shipping box that is slightly delayed you
might be able to stop the corrupted log from being applied if you catch it
ahead of time.

I don't believe that you can log ship to a destination and mirror off of
that.
You can take a belt and suspenders approach and use mirroring, plus log ship
to another destination. As long as you keep all logs and not the time of
the corruption, you can stop the restores just prior to the corruption.
Also, take snapshots frequently, you can revert to a snapshot.
